Keep your gums clean and healthy with our professional periodontal services

The periodontists at Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s Dental Department oversee the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of any case of gum disease (also known as periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the gums and teeth-supporting bones). Treatment involves a variety of specialized surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Periodontal disease can negatively impact your health in a variety of ways. Symptoms often include pain, swelling, and bleeding in the gums, pain while chewing, changes to the alignment of your teeth, and tooth loss. Beyond your oral health, however, gum disease is also associated with an increased risk for conditions that affect other parts of your body such as rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory disease, and heart disease.

Although your general dentist may oversee the treatment of certain periodontal problems, a periodontist specializes in this area of dentistry and can help with more complex issues such as advanced periodontal disease, periodontal pockets, receding gums, and regenerative procedures that stimulate healing and growth in your gums.

During your first visit with a periodontist, you will receive a thorough review of your medical and dental history and an examination of your gum line, bite, and any looseness that may be present in your teeth. You may also receive an x-ray to examine the bone below your gum line. From there, an effective treatment plan will be developed for you.

Our periodontal services

Gum Grafts: A gum graft is primarily performed to treat receding gums, which can expose tooth root surfaces. Receding gums are typically caused by periodontal disease and a heavy buildup of tartar.

Regenerative Procedures: Regenerative periodontal procedures promote healing in tooth-supporting bones and the soft tissue of the gums. These procedures involve removing disease-causing bacteria from your gum tissue and may require the use of membranes, bone grafts, or tissue-stimulating proteins.

Dental Crown Lengthening: This procedure may be used to reshape gum tissue that’s covering too much of your teeth, which can cause them to appear short and under-developed. A dental crown lengthening may also be performed to enable tooth restoration or other cosmetic procedures.

Periodontal Pocket Procedures: Periodontal disease can form “pockets” in your gum and bone tissue where bacteria may accumulate. This procedure removes bacteria from these pockets and securing the affected tissue in place.

Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling removes plaque, tartar, and other bacteria from periodontal pockets above and below the gumline. Root planing smooths over the tooth root to prevent future buildup of these toxins.

Tray Delivery Systems: We can create a custom tray, which is used to deliver dental medication at home, from impressions of your mouth. These trays allow medicine to reach bacteria and other toxins in your gums that other methods may not be able to treat effectively.
