Rotation Descriptions

  • Obstetrical Service: Residents learn to evaluate pregnant patients, manage the labor floor, manage acutely ill pregnant patients and complications, and perform vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
  • Gynecology Service: Residents learn to evaluate and manage emergency department consultations, manage gynecology in-patients and post-operative patients, and perform a wide array of gynecologic surgeries.
  • Night Float: Residents learn to manage the obstetric and gynecologic services in the evening, from Sunday evening through Friday morning.
  • Ambulatory Care Rotation: Residents obtain exposure to a variety of subspecialty out-patient office hours including Gyn Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Reproductive Endocrinology.
  • Continuity Clinic: Weekly half-hour sessions where residents see their own patients and are precepted by faculty
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Rotation: Residents become members of the ICU team to help manage critically ill patients and run codes.
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Rotation: Residents become members of the Gyn Oncology service at MSK, helping to take care of in-patients and perform surgery with world-renowned oncologists.

Subspecialty Exposure

  • Maternal Fetal Medicine: Residents obtain hands-on training in obstetric ultrasound by well experienced certified sonographers during their ambulatory rotation. In addition, when procedures such as amniocentesis, CVS, or intrauterine interventions are scheduled for complex pregnancies, residents have the option to participate. On average, 400 diagnostic procedures are performed annually. The MFM unit sees 30 to 50 patients on a daily basis. Residents also partake in seeing complicated pregnancies in High Risk Clinic where they provide complete prenatal care for complicated pregnancies until delivery.
  • Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery: Residents gain robust exposure to all types of minimally invasive surgery during their Gynecology Service rotations. This includes hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, straight-sticks laparoscopy, and robotic surgery.  As important as learning the steps and techniques of performing each procedure, residents are also taught to understand the indications for each procedure, as well as the possible alternatives and complications.  Robotic simulation training is available, as is the 24-hour simulation lab for additional practice.  Simulation didactics are also incorporated into the yearly schedule.  Our one-on-one training for the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery requirement has led to a 100% pass rate for the exam.
  • Urogynecology: In addition to didactics and Grand Rounds on related topics, residents have exposure to many pelvic reconstructive surgeries such as cystoscopy, vaginal colporrhaphies, anterior and posterior vaginal repairs, urethral sling placements, ligament fixations and sacrocolpopexies. Office hours are also available during the Ambulatory Care rotation.
  • Gynecologic Oncology: Residents obtain exposure to the management and care of patients with ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancer. Our specialist performs surgeries with residents and also precepts them in the office during the Ambulatory Care rotation.  Additionally, residents during their third year rotate at Memorial Sloan Kettering to obtain even further experience.
  • Reproductive Endocrinology: In addition to didactics and Grand Rounds on related topics, residents attend office hours at a Manhattan infertility office during their Ambulatory Care rotation.

Didactic Sessions

Incoming residents are sent recommended learning resources even prior to their first day at Flushing.  Our “bootcamp” is a crash-course on OB/GYN and is focused on what knowledge residents will need during their first days and weeks as an intern.  Summer didactics are focused on topics imperative to junior resident acclimation.  After the summer, morning conferences take place each morning on various topics, in addition to the other continuing didactics.  Friday morning are dedicated to resident education and/or wellness activities.  Specific didactic sessions include:
  1. Daily board rounds
  2. Grand rounds
  3. OB and GYN complex case presentations
  4. Statistics conferences
  5. Weekly Pre-operative conferences
  6. Journal clubs and debates
