Q-How do I know if I am eligible for weight loss surgery?A-Flushing Hospital’s Bariatric Services follows the guidelines supported by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Commonly accepted guidelines include: the patient should have a body mass index (BMI) over 40, is over 100 lbs. over their ideal body weight or has a BMI of 35 and experiencing severe health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Each case is different; therefore we strongly recommend that you visit our facility for a consultation.Q-Will I have to go on a diet before surgery?A- Yes, most physicians will place patients on a special pre-operative diet. The reason for this is to shrink the liver and reduce fat in the abdomen. Q- Is the procedure painful? A-Some patients may experience pain within the first few days after surgery. Our pain management team works with you to ensure that you are comfortable and experiencing minimal pain. Q-How long does surgery last? A-The duration of your surgey depends on the type and difficulty of each procedure. Each case is unique to the individual. Your doctor will discuss the approximate time in which your surgery should be completed.. Q-What is the recovery time? A- On average it may take four to six weeks for a full recovery. You may be able to return to work in two to three weeks with the doctor’s approval. Q-How fast will I lose weight? A- During your consultation, your doctor will discuss how much weight you can expect to lose. Weight loss expectations may vary,depending on how much you currently weigh and the type of surgery you will receive. Q-Is there support from surgeons and staff after surgery? A-Our diverse team of health professionals will guide and support each patient after surgery. Regular follow up visits and programs are scheduled to check overall wellness.
