Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory
The Department of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory is a state-of-the-art, full-service laboratory that performs approximately 1.5 million tests annually to help detect, diagnose and prevent disease. It provides a foundation for many of our most important clinical services and affords us the insight necessary to make life-saving decisions for our patients.
The department includes the Divisions of Anatomic Pathology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Phlebotomy. Among the wide range of testing performed in the department are biopsies, PAP smears, blood typing for transfusions, glucose and cholesterol levels, blood counts, culturing of infectious disease organisms, serology and DNA amplification testing.
The laboratory is fully computerized and utilizes cutting-edge technologies like voice recognition, barcoding of specimens and electronic remote reporting of results, thus ensuring the highest level of accuracy and the greatest standard of care. There is also an active blood drawing station that has been serving the needs of the community for many years.
Since 1884, the Flushing Hospital Medical Center has been proudly serving the people of Queens, New York, and this laboratory enables us to meet the needs of our patients on a much greater level.
