What is pulmonary medicine?
Pulmonary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs. It is also sometimes called pulmonology.
The Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Flushing Hospital Medical Center is dedicated to providing outstanding inpatient and outpatient care through the use of certified physicians and modern research. A variety of conditions are treated and diagnosed in the Pulmonary Department including:
- Lung cancer
- Emphysema
- COPD
- Asthma
- Pneumonia
- Lung infection
- Sleep apnea
- Shortness of breath
Pulmonary Lab Testing
The Pulmonary Function Lab located on-site is fully equipped with modern tools for evaluation testing. This outpatient service uses a variety of non-invasive procedures such as Broncho Provocation Testing and Incentive Spirometry. These services are used to evaluate the following symptoms:
- Asthma
- Shortness of breath
- Headache
- Cough
- COPD
Inpatient Care
Each medical intensive care unit is staffed by physicians certified in pulmonary and critical care, and the inpatient Pulmonary Care Unit provides care for those who require respiratory distress relief. This four-bed ventilator care unit located on the fourth floor of the main hospital is modeled to provide long-term patient care.
Elective surgical procedures are offered using the most advanced video equipment. Consultations are also provided for all inpatients.
