The Division of Gynecology at Flushing Hospital Medical Center offers a wide range of services to treat the women in our community.
Outpatient care is provided at our on-site Women’s Health Center, where patients can conveniently schedule an appointment with any number of our caring and compassionate providers.

For those patients who require inpatient care, our team of expert, board-certified GYN surgeons, who can perform a variety of minimally invasive procedures. Flushing Hospital is also one of the few area hospitals to feature the daVinci robotic surgical platform. This state-of-the-art enables our surgeons to perform a variety of procedures including, hysterectomies, myomectomies, cystectomies and other pelvic mass resections, as well as endometriosis management with the smallest of incisions. Robotic surgery has also proven to offer many other benefits, including less pain, bleeding and scarring, and faster recovery.

Some of the other minimally invasive procedures performed at Flushing Hospital include:

• Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery – Small incisions are used to perform multiple surgeries that often allow patients to go home on the same day, with minimal recovery time.
• Hysterectomy – This entails removal of the uterus. Suitable for women who do not want children in the future, this procedure is a common treatment option. Our skilled doctors can help women choose whether a robotic, laparoscopic, vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy is right for them.
• Laparoscopic Myomectomy – This minimally invasive procedure is one of the few methods approved for women who want to have children in the future. Small abdominal incisions are used to remove fibroids.
• Hysteroscopic Procedures – The procedures use the body’s natural orifices to remove pathology such as polyps, fibroids, pre-cancerous lesions, and foreign bodies.

These may be performed either in the office or in an operating room setting.

• Uterine Fibroid Embolization – This non-surgical treatment is a popular alternative to hysterectomies. We work in conjunction with the Interventional Radiology Department to offer this procedure. It involves blocking the fibroid’s blood supply, which results in shrinkage of the fibroids and improved bleeding.
• Endometrial Ablation – This minimally invasive procedure is performed to improve abnormal uterine bleeding.
• Gynecologic Laser Surgery – This ambulatory surgery is performed to ablate pre-cancerous lesions and warts.
• Cervical Cone Biopsy – This minor procedure is offered in the operating room and office setting in order to remove precancerous lesions of the cervix

Cervical Dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia is a precancerous condition in which abnormal cell growth occurs on the surface lining of the cervix or the endocervical canal.

Cervical dysplasia is often associated with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and is most common in women under age 30, although it can develop at any age.
The condition usually causes no symptoms and it is most often discovered by conducting a routine Pap test. When cervical dysplasia is detected and treated early, the outlook is very good. However, women who go undiagnosed or who don’t receive appropriate care, they are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer.

In some cases, mild cervical dysplasia will resolve without treatment, and may only require careful observation. In more severe cases, treatment to remove the abnormal cells and reduce the risk of cancer may be necessary. Some treatment options for cervical dysplasia include:

• Cryosurgery (freezing)
• Electrocauterization
• Laser surgery

Some women with fibroids experience only mild or no symptoms at all. In these cases, since they are rarely cancerous and often do not interfere with pregnancy, watchful waiting is considered the best option. Some women however develop severe symptoms, including:

• Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
• Abnormal bleeding between menstrual periods
• Pelvic pain (caused as the tumor presses on pelvic organs)
• Frequent urination
• Lower back pain
• Pain during intercourse

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center offers a wide range of surgical and non-surgical treatment options for women living with complications from fibroids. Non-surgical treatments options include the prescribing of a variety of medications designed to manage symptoms such as: hormone therapy, Progestin-releasing intrauterine device (IUD), or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

For those women who require surgical intervention, our highly specialized doctors can perform a variety of minimally or non-invasive procedures including:

• Uterine artery embolization -Small particles (embolic agents) are injected into the arteries supplying the uterus, cutting off blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink and die.
• Myomectomy – In a myomectomy, your surgeon removes the fibroids, leaving the uterus in place.
• Hysterectomy – This surgical, which involves the removal of the uterus, remains the only proven permanent solution for uterine fibroids.

Gynecological Cancer

Gynecological cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells that originate in the female reproductive organs. There are several different types of gynecological cancers, all of which are named for the part of the body where the cancer originates. They include

• Cervical Cancer – originates in the cervix, which is the lower, narrow end of the uterus.
• Ovarian Cancer – originates inthe ovaries, which are located on each side of the uterus
• Uterine Cancer – originates in the uterus, the pear-shaped organ in a woman’s pelvis where the baby grows when a woman is pregnant
• Vaginal cancer – originates in the vagina, which is the hollow, tube-like channel between the bottom of the uterus and the outside of the body.
• Vulvar Cancer – originates in the vulva, the outer part of the female genital organs.

It is estimated that between 90,000 – 100,000 women are diagnosed with some form of gynecological cancer each year.
