It may also cause a headache or a throbbing pain in the face.<\/p>\n<p>The common cold is the usual cause of a sinus infection. However, other viruses, bacteria, fungi, and allergies can cause it.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of a sinus infection include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A runny nose with thick yellow or greenish mucus<\/li>\n<li>Post-nasal drip<\/li>\n<li>A stuffy nose<\/li>\n<li>Pain, tenderness, swelling, and pressure around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead that gets worse when bending over<\/li>\n<li>Ear pressure or pain<\/li>\n<li>Pain or pressure in your teeth<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Cough<\/li>\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Tiredness<\/li>\n<li>A changed sense of smell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some people are more likely to get a sinus infection than others. Risk factors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nasal allergies<\/li>\n<li>Asthma<\/li>\n<li>Nasal polyps<\/li>\n<li>A deviated septum<\/li>\n<li>A weakened immune system<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When diagnosing a sinus infection, a healthcare provider may ask about your symptoms and do an exam. The exam might include feeling for tenderness in the nose and face, and looking inside the nose.<\/p>\n<p>Other ways to diagnose a sinus infection and rule out other conditions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A nasal endoscopy<\/li>\n<li>Imaging studies<\/li>\n<li>Nasal and sinus swab samples<\/li>\n<li>Allergy testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most sinus infection cases get better on their own.
