According to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the recommended\u00a0<span style=\"color: #333333;font-style: normal;font-weight: 300\">amount of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300\">daily fluid intake is around 15.5 cups for men and 11.5 for women. For many of us, it might be harder to reach these quantities during the winter months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some causes of winter dehydration include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indoor heat<\/li>\n<li>Bundling up in too many layers<\/li>\n<li>Lack of thirst<\/li>\n<li>Fluid loss from respiration<\/li>\n<li>More frequent urination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many signs of dehydration, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The color of your urine<\/li>\n<li>Constipation<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Dry mouth and chapped lips<\/li>\n<li>Dry skin<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<li>Irritability<\/li>\n<li>Feeling faint or dizzy<\/li>\n<li>A rapid heart rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some tips for staying hydrated in the winter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink warm fluids if it is too difficult to drink cold water when it\u2019s cold outside.<\/li>\n<li>Infuse plain water by adding flavorings such as a wedge of lemon or lime, other pieces of fruit, or unsweetened water enhancers.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a reusable water bottle with you to encourage daily hydration.<\/li>\n<li>Eat homemade soups and water-rich fruits and vegetables to help increase fluid intake.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid drinking caffeine as it can contribute to dehydration.<\/li>\n<li>Swap drinking an alcoholic beverage for a mocktail.<\/li>\n<li>Make hydration a routine by drinking a certain amount of water daily.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have symptoms of dehydration, consult with a physician immediately. A severe case of dehydration can lead to complications and potentially death.
