It also describes the negative feelings that can occur when your needs for social connection aren\u2019t met.<\/p>\n<p>Social isolation is when a person doesn\u2019t have relationships or contact with others and has little to no social support. It can pose a health risk to people, even if they don\u2019t feel lonely.<\/p>\n<p>Certain conditions or experiences may increase a person\u2019s risk of social isolation and loneliness, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Having a mental or physical challenge, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>Chronic disease or condition<\/li>\n<li>Psychiatric or depressive condition<\/li>\n<li>Long-term disability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Being marginalized or discriminated against<\/li>\n<li>Having limited or no access to resources may result in:\n<ul>\n<li>Living in rural areas<\/li>\n<li>Limited transportation<\/li>\n<li>Language barriers<\/li>\n<li>Being a victim of violence or abuse<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Facing a divorce, unemployment, or the loss of a loved one<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Loneliness may impact some groups more than others, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low-income adults<\/li>\n<li>Young adults<\/li>\n<li>Older adults<\/li>\n<li>Adults living alone<\/li>\n<li>Immigrants<\/li>\n<li>People who identify as LGBTQ+<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Social isolation and loneliness can increase a person\u2019s risk for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart disease and stroke<\/li>\n<li>Type 2 diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Depression, anxiety, suicide, and self-harm<\/li>\n<li>Dementia<\/li>\n<li>Earlier death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is important to make meaningful social connections, as those who do experience benefits, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Less stress<\/li>\n<li>Better sleep<\/li>\n<li>A longer, healthier life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Making social connections can be hard, especially if you are in poor health, have money problems, or live alone.
