An inguinal hernia happens when part of the membrane lining the abdominal cavity or intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdomen, often along the inguinal canal, which carries the spermatic cord in men.<\/p>\n<p>Some signs and symptoms of a bilateral inguinal hernia include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A bulge in the area on both sides of your pubic bone, which becomes more obvious when you\u2019re upright, especially if you cough or strain<\/li>\n<li>A burning or aching sensation at the bulge<\/li>\n<li>Pain or discomfort in your groin, especially when bending over, coughing, or lifting<\/li>\n<li>A heavy or dragging sensation in your groin<\/li>\n<li>Weakness or pressure in your groin<\/li>\n<li>Occasionally, pain, and swelling around the testicles when the protruding intestine descends into the scrotum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some inguinal hernias have no apparent cause. Other causes of hernias can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased pressure within the abdomen<\/li>\n<li>A preexisting weak spot in the abdominal wall<\/li>\n<li>Straining during bowel movements or urination<\/li>\n<li>Strenuous activity<\/li>\n<li>Pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Chronic coughing or sneezing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some risk factors that contribute to developing an inguinal hernia include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being male<\/li>\n<li>Being older<\/li>\n<li>Family history<\/li>\n<li>Premature birth and low birth weight<\/li>\n<li>Previous inguinal hernia or hernia repair<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A physical exam is usually all that is needed to diagnose an inguinal hernia. Your doctor will check for a bulge in the groin area. They can also ask you to stand and cough or strain because standing and coughing can make a hernia more prominent.<\/p>\n<p>Healthcare providers recommend surgery for most inguinal hernias. The types of surgeries used to repair inguinal hernias include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open surgery<\/li>\n<li>Laparoscopic surgery<\/li>\n<li>Robotic-assisted surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Robot-assisted surgery can repair smaller hernias or rebuild your entire abdominal wall.
