It allows our bodies to recharge and provides additional benefits including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improving memory and concentration<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening the immune system<\/li>\n<li>Reducing stress<\/li>\n<li>Lowering the risk of chronic health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consequently, not getting enough quality sleep can harm our health. \u00a0\u00a0A lack of quality sleep can result in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Difficulty concentrating<\/li>\n<li>Insomnia and other sleep disorders<\/li>\n<li>Increased stress<\/li>\n<li>An increased risk of developing health conditions such as diabetes<\/li>\n<li>An increased risk of developing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thankfully, our body tells us when we are depriving ourselves of quality sleep so that we can make improvements. Signs of poor-quality sleep include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking 30 minutes or more to fall asleep<\/li>\n<li>Feeling sleepy or tired, even after getting enough sleep<\/li>\n<li>Waking up often throughout the night and lying awake for several minutes<\/li>\n<li>Having trouble concentrating during the day<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing hunger more often<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder such as snoring or gasping for air<\/li>\n<li>Having dark circles or bags under the eyes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Improving sleep quality can be achieved by making simple changes to our lifestyles. Here are a few recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Remove electronic devices such as TVs, computers, and phones from the bedroom.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t use tobacco.<\/li>\n<li>Get some exercise.
