This year, the World Health Organization is asking food producers, policy-makers and the public to think about and promote food safety.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/large-poster300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-762\" src=\"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/large-poster300.jpg\" alt=\"large-poster300\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control estimates that each year roughly one in six Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die of foodborne diseases. \u00a0More than 200 diseases, like salmonella, listeria and e. coli, are spread through improper food handling, causing symptoms such as stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>With warmer weather on the way, here are five food handling tips that will help make your meals safer:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Keep clean \u2013 Wash your hands before handling food and often during food preparation. Wash your hands after using the bathroom.\u00a0 Keep food preparation surfaces and equipment clean.<\/li>\n<li>Keep raw and cooked food separate \u2013 Store food in containers to prevent cross contamination.<\/li>\n<li>Cook thoroughly \u2013 Be sure to cook and reheat food thoroughly, especially meat, poultry, eggs and seafood. Use a meat thermometer to check cooking temperatures.<\/li>\n<li>Store food at safe temperatures \u2013 Don\u2019t leave cooked food at room temperature for more than two hours. Refrigerate all cooked and perishable foods below 5 degrees Celsius. Don\u2019t keep leftovers too long and always defrost food in the fridge, not on the counter.<\/li>\n<li>Choose foods wisely \u2013 Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables before eating and don\u2019t use food beyond its expiration date.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These few simple guidelines will help keep your food and kitchen cleaner, and your family healthier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
