It is caused by damage to the lungs over a prolonged period of time and is usually attributed to smoking.<\/p>\n<p>COPD can result in serious, long-term disability and is the third leading cause of death in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of COPD typically present when there is significant damage to the lung. They may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Chronic cough<\/li>\n<li>Frequent respiratory infections<\/li>\n<li>Wheezing<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the feet, ankles or legs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those most at risk of developing COPD are individuals who:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Are over age 40 and currently smoke or smoked at some point<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Worked or lived around chemicals or fumes<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Have certain genetic conditions<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Have asthma<\/p>\n<p>If you think you have COPD, you should:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Talk with your healthcare provider about your symptoms<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Request a breathing test, known as a spirometry<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Quit smoking! If you need help, ask your doctor<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Avoid pollutants or fumes that can irritate your lungs<\/p>\n<p>COPD can lead to other health complications such as heart problems, lung cancer, or high blood pressure in the arteries that bring blood to your lungs.<\/p>\n<p>While you can\u2019t undo the damage COPD has caused to your lungs, there are steps you can take to prevent the condition from getting worse, this includes avoiding factors that can irritate lungs, taking medications as directed, enrolling in a pulmonary rehabilitation program, and receiving annual flu and pneumonia vaccines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
