Children diagnosed with the disorder are often considered to be on the \u201chigh functioning\u201d end of the autism spectrum. \u00a0\u00a0High functioning is the term used to refer to children on the spectrum who can read, speak, write\u00a0or manage other life skills with very little assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The causes of Asperger\u2019s are unknown; however, experts are investigating possible factors such as genetics and abnormalities in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Signs and symptoms of Asperger\u2019s typically appear first during early childhood and vary in severity, they may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoiding eye contact<\/li>\n<li>Showing few emotions<\/li>\n<li>Showing little or no empathy for others<\/li>\n<li>Not understanding or missing social cues such as body language<\/li>\n<li>Repeating the same movements or topic of conversation<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with having conversations<\/li>\n<li>Frequently speaking to oneself<\/li>\n<li>Possessing a remarkable ability in paying attention to detail<\/li>\n<li>Displaying hypersensitivities to light, sounds and tastes<\/li>\n<li>Having difficulty with change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speak to your pediatrician if you notice these signs and symptoms in your child.
