{"id":2974,"date":"2017-06-09T20:17:46","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T20:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/?p=2974"},"modified":"2019-08-20T11:15:29","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T11:15:29","slug":"stiff-neck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/stiff-neck\/","title":{"rendered":"Stiff Neck"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/neck-pain-607490232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2976\" src=\"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/neck-pain-607490232-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/neck-pain-607490232-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/neck-pain-607490232-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/flushinghospital.org\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/neck-pain-607490232.jpg 508w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Whether it has occurred when first waking in the morning or developed after performing strenuous activities; most people have experienced a stiff neck at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>A stiff neck, typically characterized by limited mobility (commonly from side to side) and pain is often caused by muscle strain, inflammation of the joints or soft tissue sprain.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of activities that may contribute to a stiff neck include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking at smartphones or similar electronic devices for an extended period of time<\/li>\n<li>Driving for a long period of time<\/li>\n<li>Sleeping with the neck in an awkward position<\/li>\n<li>Falling or sudden impact<\/li>\n<li>Turning the head repeatedly from side to side during an activity<\/li>\n<li>Experiencing prolonged periods of stress, which can lead to tension of neck muscles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following self-care treatments can be applied for mild cases of a stiff neck:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heat or cold therapy<\/li>\n<li>Resting the neck by reducing activities that require frequent movement<\/li>\n<li>Over-the-counter medications ( used as recommended or as advised by a physician)<\/li>\n<li>Low impact exercises<\/li>\n<li>Massages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On rare occasions, a stiff neck may be indicative of a more serious health condition. If a stiff neck is accompanied by the following symptoms, it is advised that medical attention is sought right away:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Headaches<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Coordination issues<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mental state (confusion or mood swings)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is also recommended that you see a doctor if milder symptoms of a stiff neck including pain and limited mobility do not improve after a week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"disclaimer\">All content of this newsletter is intended for general information purposes only and is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
