When you are scheduled for an exam, such as an ultrasound or a sonogram, they might sound like they are the same thing. However, ultrasounds and sonograms are two different parts of the same medical test. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An ultrasound exam is a procedure that uses sound waves beyond the range humans can hear to create images of soft tissues inside the body, helping healthcare providers diagnose or rule out several conditions. Ultrasounds also can\u2019t see structures inside your joints, such as cartilage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Healthcare providers\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0just use\u00a0ultrasound\u00a0as a standalone medical exam.\u00a0They also use it to guide minimally invasive procedures, such as\u00a0breast\u00a0biopsy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A sonogram\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0real-time, moving image\u00a0created by\u00a0an\u00a0ultrasound machine. It can be\u00a0printed,\u00a0saved digitally,\u00a0or\u00a0used to show organs, soft tissues, blood flow, or a developing\u00a0baby.\u00a0Sonograms\u00a0will be viewed and interpreted by a radiologist who\u00a0will send a report to your referring\u00a0healthcare\u00a0provider with a diagnosis or other information based on your results.\u00a0A\u00a0healthcare provider\u00a0will\u00a0then\u00a0study\u00a0and review\u00a0the sonogram images and video loops\u00a0to detect abnormalities,\u00a0monitor\u00a0health conditions, and support treatment planning.\u00a0These images help healthcare providers explain findings\u00a0clearly and give patients a better understanding of their medical care.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Understanding the difference between an ultrasound and a sonogram helps patients navigate medical imaging more confidently.
