DVT usually happens in the legs and causes leg pain or swelling.<\/p>\n<p>Other symptoms of DVT include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Leg cramping or soreness that often starts in the calf<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 A change in skin color in one leg to red or purple, depending on skin color<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 A feeling of warmth on the affected leg<\/p>\n<p>Deep vein thrombosis can occur without any noticeable symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>A person can develop DVT if they have certain medical conditions that prevent the blood from flowing or affect how the blood clots.<\/p>\n<p>Medical conditions that can lead to deep vein thrombosis include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Heart diseases<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Cancer and some cancer treatments<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Inherited blood clotting disorders such as sickle cell<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Inflammatory bowel disease<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Obesity<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Autoimmune diseases such as lupus<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Varicose veins<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Paralysis<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Pregnancy<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Serious infections<\/p>\n<p>Other factors that can increase the risk of DVT include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Age<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Lack of movement<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Injury or surgery<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Smoking<\/p>\n<p>DVT is diagnosed when a healthcare provider performs a physical exam and asks about your symptoms. During the physical exam, they will check your legs for swelling, tenderness, and any changes in skin color. The tests a healthcare provider will order depend on if they think you are at a low or high risk of developing DVT. Tests include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 D-dimer blood test<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Duplex ultrasound<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Venography<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 MRI<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for DVT has three main goals:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 To prevent the clot from breaking loose and traveling to the lungs<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 To prevent the clot from getting bigger<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 To reduce the chances of developing DVT again<\/p>\n<p>Treatment options for DVT include:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Blood thinners<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Clot busters<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Filters<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Compression stockings<\/p>\n<p>Making lifestyle changes may help prevent deep vein thrombosis.
