Hospice Unit at Flushing Hospital

Caring for someone suffering from a terminal illness can be a stressful time for family and loved-ones. Understanding this challenge, Flushing Hospital offers a dedicated inpatient Hospice Unit.

The Maureen Russo Hospice Unit at Flushing Hospital is a four-bed unit that addresses the medical, social, and spiritual needs of its patients all in a comfortable and home-like environment, while providing emotional support to their families.


A Home-Like Environment

The Maureen Russo Hospice Unit at Flushing Hospital is dedicated to providing patients and their families comfort care in a quiet and relaxing location.

The unit currently boasts the following:

  • Extra large private patient rooms with brand new furniture
  • Convertible couch for overnight guests
  • A flat screen television and internet service
  • Additional home-like furnishings.

The unit also includes a family room and a lounge with a kitchen area, microwave, refrigerator, comfortable chairs, a big screen television, and a wide variety of reading material.


Hospice Staff and Services

The unit is staffed by a team of experienced professionals, who have all received specialized training and offers a variety of comfort care services to hospice patients. The team of physicians, nurses, and social workers provides exceptional inpatient medical care to manage all symptoms commonly experienced by hospice patients. Additionally, the facility offers a wide list of social and support services, ensuring that patients and their families receive a comfortable end of life experience.

The hospice unit offers the following ancillary services:

  • Bereavement services and grief counseling
  • Family advocacy
  • Spiritual support / pastoral care
  • Dedicated volunteer services

Hospice Unit Criteria

Individuals who meet the following criteria are eligible for admission into the hospice unit: Those who have less than two weeks to live; whose medical needs cannot be cared for at home; and/or can be medically stabilized to continue care at home.
