Flushing Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) is committed to ensuring the continuation of services during any potential disaster situations. To this end, we have developed a comprehensive emergency management program that mobilizes facility resources to coordinate all aspects ofthe hospital’s operations during a time of crisis that could result in a surge in patient volume. The program goals are:

  • Maintain consistent delivery of high quality medical services under extreme conditions
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and employees
  • Employ systems to ensure business continuity
  • Continually address the medical needs of the community

The scope of the emergency management program includes the assessment of hazards that potentially affect any entity of the FHMC enterprise, including, but not limited to:

  • All on campus departments and operations
  • Community based ambulatory care settings
  • Transition Care Units
  • Prehospital Care operations

Assets and resources from any and all of these entities may also be utilized to manage emergency incidents.
The management of emergency events impacting FHMC has been standardized to address:

  • Potential patient generating events that may occur in the community.
  • Interruptions in services, systems, supplies, and utilities that could potentially impact the delivery of patient care.
  • Disruptive events that could potentially impact the patient care environment.
  • Events that result in temporary or long-term staffing shortages.

This all-hazards approach to planning includes the following categories:

  • Mass Casualty Incidents
  • Severe Weather Incidents
  • Environment of Care Incidents
  • Systems/Utility Failures
  • Staffing and Supplies Shortages
  • Security/Safety Incidents
  • Mass Gathering Events

As a vital component of the community’s infrastructure, MediSys Health Network stands ready to respond to emergency situations that affect the community and is committed to insuring the ability of our facilities to function under extreme circumstances.
