Flushing Hospital Medical Center, through an affiliation with the Cohen Children’s Medical Center, at North Shore LIJ, offers the latest in Pediatric Surgery procedures to the community. This group of highly trained Pediatric Surgeons is now proud to bring their years of expertise to Flushing Hospital. The team is led by Dr. Steven Stylianos, Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, as well as Chief of Pediatric Surgery at The Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Stylianos is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine. He did his surgical residency training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and completed his pediatric surgical training fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The newly renovated and thoroughly modern operating suites at Flushing Hospital Medical Center allow the team to perform all the latest procedures on their patients. These Board Certified pediatric surgeons perform procedures on fetuses, infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
The Pediatric Surgical group specializes in minimally invasive procedures and performs a wide variety of procedures either laparoscopically or thoracoscopically. These techniques have been demonstrated to benefit the pediatric patient by allowing them to have shorter recovery times, fewer post-op complications, less pain from healing because of smaller incisions which mean less scaring, and less time spent in the hospital. The procedures are well tolerated by the patients and with many of the procedures that the team performs, the patient is able to go home that same day.
Laparoscopic surgery is a highly specialized method of performing surgical procedures. Rather than using one large incision as is used in “open procedures’, this type of procedure uses several much smaller incisions. Through the use of a laparoscope, which is a mini camera that is inserted into the surgical area, and small instruments passed through the small incision sites; the surgeons are able to accomplish the same results as they could with the open technique.
The surgical team works with the referring physician and keeps them informed at all times of the surgical course of action.
In most instances the child’s parents are allowed to be with the patient throughout the pre-op and recovery periods.
The Pediatric Surgical Team sees patients in the Ambulatory Care Center at Flushing Hospital on a regularly scheduled basis. They are also available for in-patient consultations as well as to see patients in the Emergency Department for consultation as necessary.
